[edit] Plot

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Phoebe and Monica are out at the newsstand (Phoebe wanted to see if they had the previous day's newspaper to see if her horoscope was right), when they spot an attractive guy. Phoebe convinces Monica to whistle at him; Monica yells "Woo-woo" at him instead. He turns to look... and is hit by an ambulance, landing him in a coma. Monica and Phoebe decide that since they're responsible for his being in a coma, they should take care of him. They bring him flowers, they shave him, they try to guess his name (Phoebe guesses it's either Glen or Agamemnon). Soon, they're sneaking off to see him separately, sparking competition between the two. However, once Coma Guy wakes up, he's less than appreciative of their efforts.

Everyone except for Chandler wants to watch The Tonight Show, because of the guest that will be on: Nora Tyler Bing, famous romance novelist - and Chandler's mother. Chandler finds out, via the show, that his mom is planning to come to New York to visit him. "Most moms use the phone," he laments.

When Nora comes into town, she takes the gang out for Mexican food. When Rachel shows up with Paolo, Ross gets upset, and then drunk. Nora comforts him... and they wind up kissing.

Joey, having caught Ross and Nora kissing, convinces Ross to tell Chandler. According to Joey, you never kiss a mom. "Sisters are okay, maybe a hot-lookin' aunt, but not a mom, never a mom!" Ross resists at first, but eventually tells Chandler what he's done (after first blaming it on Paolo). An upset Chandler confronts his mother, who admits it was stupid.

Rachel, inspired by Nora's success, tries her hand at writing a romance novel. The gang quickly notices that she's not much of a typist - pointing out bits involving "heaving beasts," "niffles" (usually found on the "heaving beasts"), "public hair" and "throbbing pens." Of the "throbbing pens," Ross says: "You don't want to be around when he starts writing with those!"

[edit] Trivia

  • This episode marks the first mention of Rachel's middle name, Karen.
