"The One With Five Steaks and an Eggplant" is the fifth episode of season two of the television situation comedy Friends.

First aired: October 19, 1995.

[edit] Plot

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

A woman named Jade accidentally calls Chandler and Joey's apartment, looking for a man named Bob. Chandler pretends to be Bob and agrees to meet with her, so he (as himself) can be there to console her when Bob fails to show up. Things go well, for awhile. Jade then calls "Bob" again and tells him about Chandler's shortcomings in the bedroom department.

A big celebration is planned for Ross's birthday - including tickets to a Hootie & the Blowfish concert. Rachel, Phoebe and Joey get upset, because they don't make as much money as the others. This is compounded even further when Monica gets promoted to Head Lunch Chef (also in charge of Purchasing, with her own little desk when Roland's not there and a beeper) at Iridium and wants to go "someplace nice" to celebrate.

Monica presents the group with five steaks and an eggplant (for vegetarian Phoebe) given to her by a meat supplier at work. She reveals that she, Ross, and Chandler went in to buy tickets for all six of them for the concert - but Rachel, Joey, and Phoebe view their gesture as "charity" and refuse to attend. Monica, Ross, and Chandler have a great time at the concert - they run into a guy Monica used to babysit, who gets them backstage. Rachel and Phoebe, meanwhile, try to guess how many fingers Joey is holding up.

The next day, Rachel, Phoebe and Joey are upset that the others got to meet the band. Another argument ensues. Monica's boss pages her to tell her that she's been fired for accepting the steaks from the meat supplier - apparently, it was viewed as a "kickback." Monica is so upset, the rest of the gang puts their argument aside. Joey pays for her muffin (with help from Chandler).

[edit] Trivia

  • At the concert Monica is recognized by a lawyer who remembers she was his babysitter when he was 8. Since graduation from law school normally occurs at about age 25, the babysitting would have been 17 years ago, when Monica herself was not much more than 8.
  • When Monica first meets the lawyer he asks her if she was the babysitter who made out with his dad. Later she informs Rachel that she ran into the lawyer on which Rachel replies "How's his dad?" implying that she was the babysitter he made out with.
  • At the end of the episode Joey was originally supposed to answer the phone. However Matt LeBlanc fell over on his way to the phone and the producers left it in as it was so funny.

[edit] Additional cast
