[edit] Plot

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Joey is excited about his job as co-host for a PBS telethon, but Phoebe reveals that she hates PBS: she wrote a letter to Sesame Street after her mom committed suicide but never got a reply. Phoebe and Joey then get into an argument about whether a selfless good deed exists. Phoebe is unable to think of a selfless good deed but vows to find one and prove Joey wrong.

Emily finally calls Ross, originally to tell Ross to stop harassing her relatives. However, she is willing to work on their relationship if Ross comes to London.

When Rachel catches Monica in a provocative position ("Since when do you take naps in that position?!"), Monica says that she was waiting for someone from work instead of Chandler. Not realizing that Chandler is Monica's secret boyfriend, Rachel tells him that Monica's secret boyfriend is the best sex she ever had, which prompts Chandler to start acting like a smug jerk (doing one of his patented 'victory dances' on Monica's coffee table).

Joey is crushed to learn that his co-hosting job at the telethon is just answering phones off-camera. Still on a quest to perform a selfless good deed, Phoebe makes a pledge to PBS, even though she still hates the station and therefore gets no pleasure out of it. But as she's basking in her glory, her contribution manages to get Joey on TV, making her feel good and thus becoming a selfish deed.

Chandler manages to win Monica back by saying that the only reason he was good was because of her. They continue their secret affair, even sleeping together in a storage closet at Central Perk.

Unable to leave his son Ben behind, Ross manages to convince Emily to come to New York. However, Emily has a severe stipulation: Ross cannot see Rachel anymore. Ross tells everyone except Rachel about Emily's demand, and they are unable to help. Rachel encourages him to do whatever is necessary to save his relationship with Emily, unaware that her words will result in her no longer being able to see Ross. Ross calls Emily and tells her that he will not see Rachel anymore.
