[edit] Plot

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Joey accidentally drinks from a glass of fat that Monica is storing in the refrigerator of her apartment. Ross enters and complains that neither Joey nor Chandler is dressed; Ross will be giving a speech at the museum in exactly 26 minutes. (The entire episode occurs in real time, a homage to fellow sitcom Seinfeld, and does not leave the central room of Monica's apartment.) Rachel emerges from the bathroom and says that she will be dressed in a few minutes... after she decides what to wear.

Phoebe arrives, dressed and ready. Chandler emerges from the bathroom only to discover that Joey is sitting in the armchair he vacated. Joey refuses to budge, and they get engaged in a protracted argument about the "ownership" of the chair. Monica arrives and checks the answering machine, finding a message from her old flame, Richard Burke, which may or may not have been left that day. She can't decide whether to return it. Chandler annoys Joey in an attempt to reclaim his seat, and Joey flings hummus onto Phoebe's dress. When Phoebe asks Monica for help in removing it, Monica blurts, "If it is a new message, what is he calling to say?" Ross forces her back to her dressing room while Phoebe retreats to the bathroom to try and salvage her dress. Chandler decides to get dressed, but he vows to win back the chair on his return. While Rachel and Phoebe bemoan the hummus-stained dress, Monica emerges and admits that she has left Richard a message: "It was a casual, breezy message. It was breezy!" To prove it, she dials into Richard's voice mail (as she knows his passcode) and plays her message. Chandler enters and makes a dive for the chair, but Joey gets there first. Monica's message is revealed to be not-breezy. Worse, the next message is a woman's voice, saying she had fun yesterday and that Richard should call her back.

Chandler and the others convince Monica that the woman's voice was actually Richard's daughter Michelle, and Monica goes to dress while Rachel tries to find something for both Phoebe and herself to wear. This exasperates Ross; they have only twelve minutes before they have to leave. Chandler gets Joey to abandon the chair and get dressed, but Joey takes the cushions of the chair. Ross tries to pick a dress for Rachel but is shot down when his choice turns out to be a Little Bo Peep costume. Joey returns and demands that Chandler return his underwear, which the latter has hidden. When Chandler demands the cushions in exchange, Joey vows to do the opposite of Chandler's hiding his clothes. Phoebe emerges with a large Christmas ribbon over the stain. Ross discovers that his watch has stopped and he has only seven minutes to get his friends dressed and into the cabs. When Rachel emerges to consult with Phoebe on shoe selection, Ross vents his anger on her, yelling for her to just pick something and get dressed.

Monica emerges and calls Michelle Burke, confirming that it was her voice on Richard's answering machine, only to have Michelle call her back. Monica wanders off on the phone, and, in a short break in the action, Chandler engages Phoebe in a much-celebrated discussion of why Donald Duck puts a towel around his waist when emerging from the shower when he doesn't wear pants. Monica asks Michelle not to tell her father about Monica's indiscretions, but Michelle refuses and hangs up. Ross sends Monica back to her room to dress, but immediately must send Chandler and Phoebe in after her when they realizes she has a phone there. Rachel emerges in sweats, claiming she's not going to go: being yelled at and humiliated in front of her friends has ruined her willingness to attend a museum benefit dinner. Phoebe and Chandler emerge from Monica's room, phone in hand, just in time to see Joey stride in wearing everything Chandler owns. Ross, infuriated, bans Chandler and Joey from coming, and then begs Rachel to forgive him, saying he'll do anything. "You could drink the fat," Joey says, and Rachel agrees. Ross is about to do so when Rachel stops him. She and Joey hurry off to change, Ross scampers off to get a cab, and Monica tries to delete her own message from Richard's answering machine... Only to discover she has accidentally changed his outgoing message into a very personal one instead. Finally, Rachel emerges dressed with five seconds to spare...and she too is going commando.

[edit] Trivia

  • This is one of Friends' few bottle episodes, in that, except for the closing-credits scene and a two-line voice-over by Tom Selleck, it utilizes no guest stars or extras whatsoever, and only one set. Despite this, it was one of the most celebrated episode of the series: when NBC broadcast the best six episodes of the series as voted on by fans, The One Where No One's Ready placed third, behind only The One Where Ross Finds Out (second) and The One With the Prom Video (first).[citation needed]
  • The entire episode takes place in real time as the characters get ready for Ross's event.
  • Ross wears a dinosaur watch.
