[edit] Plot

Mr. Heckles, Monica and Rachel's downstairs neighbor, dies while banging on the ceiling in order to get the girls to quiet down. He bequeaths all his worldly possessions to the girls, who are thrilled - until they clean his apartment and find it's filled with useless junk. Rachel finds a tacky seashell lamp and falls in love with it; Monica's reluctance to let her keep it makes Rachel realize that Monica still thinks of their apartment as "her" apartment, and Rachel just rents a room there.

While looking through an old yearbook and some photographs, Chandler finds that he and Mr. Heckles were eerily similar - both were voted Class Clown, both played the clarinet, and both dumped girls for superficial reasons. Determined not to die alone like Heckles did, Chandler calls old flame Janice - only to find that she's married and pregnant. He ultimately gets over his "dumped girls for superficial reasons" habit and asks out a girl from work who has an exceptionally large head.

Phoebe and Ross argue over the theory of evolution, with Ross eventually admitting that he doesn't necessarily know it all and Phoebe berating him for backing down so easily.

They finish cleaning the apartment and leave. Chandler shows last respect to Heckles - "Goodbye, Mr. Heckles. We'll try to keep it down".

[edit] Trivia

  • Chandler has broken up with a woman named Joan because of her large nostrils, reminding Joey of his breaking up with someone because of her large Adam's apple. When the gang try to tell Joey that women don't have Adam's apples, he starts to panic, but they finally tell him it's not true ("That was a good one. For a second there, I was like, "whoa."")
  • Heckles was in the scale modeler's club, and Chandler also had an interest in it.

[edit] Quotes

  • Mr. Treegerr: He musta been sweepin'. They found a broom in his hand.
    Monica: That's terrible.
Mr. Treegerr: I know. I was sweepin' yesterday. It coulda been me.
