The New College is a popular college in Chennai, South India. The College is notable for its astonishing Indo-Saracenic architecture along side modern lecture rooms. The college was started in the year 1951 under the management of MEASI (Muslim Education Association of South India) primarily to meet the education demands of Muslim students in Southern India. The college now boasts an Autonomous status affliated to University of Madras.

The college is located in Peter’s Road off Anna Salai. The New College is one of the few colleges to be situated inside the city hub in a vast area comprising of beautiful buildings, play ground, convention centre, library, canteen and a Mosque. Most of the structures in the campus were in old state and are now under renovation.

The college offers most demanding courses through day and evening sessions. New courses are introduced regularly, but in the process a few of the traditional basic courses are being engulfed, which has caused a bit of discomfort among some staff. Nevertheless the College administration continuously strive to meet the standards of the changing world. The New College also offers many Management & Engineering courses. NCIM (New College Institute of Management) placed within the New College campus offer MBA. The department of Physics and research in soil biotechnology are noteworthy for its infrastructure.

The college boasts its representation in university sport teams through decades and a few making it to the national team too. Apart from sports the college also features members of various student volunteer organisation including NCC, NSS, YRC and Rotaract club.

The culture within the campus of this college is of much controversy than most other colleges in Chennai. Ragging had been cause of disturbance for decades and curbing of which has not been much possible by the administration mainly because the location of the campus aids as a selective advantage for such anti-social activities.

However ragging has now been put under control with strict disciplinary activites.

Nevertheless, in spite of the college being run by a Muslim management and a overwhelming Muslim majority within both staff and students, no complaints of religious intolerance or racism has ever been reported. The campus is quite cosmopolitan with students from all over India and abroad, especially from Islamic nations such as Saudi Arabia, Oman, Sudan and Bangladesh.

The college conducts elections to select Students Chairman & General Secretary shows its democratic nature and it is a notable event where all the students are free to elect their representatives. Critics claim that the students who win here are backed by the local political parties and often use violence or threats of it to garner votes or discourage opposition.

The college since it is run by the trust believes in following old school methods, therefore beuracratic. Most of the employees(barring the professors) are often blamed by students of being too old and lazy to work anywhere else.
