[edit] Synopsis
Roy attacks Jim for kissing Pam but is subdued by Dwight with pepper spray. Roy is fired, and Jim (feeling guilty about all of the pranks over the years) tries to show his appreciation to Dwight for saving his skin, but each gesture is coolly rejected.
The extra workload Darryl has inherited due to the merger is now exacerbated by Roy's dismissal, and he asks for a 10% raise. Michael, as it turns out, is woefully inept at salary negotiations, including for himself. Darryl determines that corporate won't give him the raise he wants because it would make him higher-paid than Michael, and he goads Michael into demanding his own raise. Michael, Toby and Darryl drive to Corporate Headquarters to negotiate Michael's raise with Jan. She initially tries to keep their romantic relationship out of it, but ultimately gives Michael the maximum 12% raise that was authorized, despite his continued inability to properly negotiate.
In the break room, Pam tells Jim that she is sorry about Roy almost killing him. Jim is very distant and despondent toward Pam - her apology as well as her promise to avoid any further attempt at a relationship with Roy causes Jim to chuckle. Soon after, Roy, escorted by a security guard, enters the office to pick up his last paycheck. While there, he quickly apologizes to Jim and asks Pam if they can meet for coffee. Their meeting at a local diner is awkward and ends with their relationship and even friendship appearing to be over, with Roy not understanding his long-time fiancée, specifically her choice to not pursue the man she truly loves: Jim. Throughout the day Angela interviews people from the office to try to extract new details of her secret lover Dwight's heroic actions. At the end of the day when everyone else appears to be gone, she and Dwight engage in passionate kissing. Jim comes out of the men's restroom and sees them and, once safely inside the bathroom, vows to the camera he will never tell anyone about Angela and Dwight's relationship and thus he and Dwight are even.
The next day Andy returns from anger management, seemingly ready to make amends with his co-workers. However, on his way in, Dwight sprays him with pepper spray and Andy falls to the floor in agony. Toby then confiscates all of Dwight's weapons (which include, a stun gun, a boomerang, handcuffs, a nightstick, a pair of brass knuckles, and a samurai sword). In an interview, Dwight states that unlike "Hiro, from Heroes", and Bono, he is not a hero.
[edit] Trivia
- In the episode Boys and Girls, Darryl says to Michael regarding his wage "... but we get compensated very differently." And in the episode E-mail Surveillance, Michael states "There are certain things a boss does not share with his employees. His salary, that would depress them." On the contrary, in this episode, Darryl was more amazed than depressed to learn that Michael earns little more than he does.
- This episode contains many callbacks to earlier episodes.
- Dwight confuses hero and superhero. ("Diversity Day")
- Kevin watches Jim's back in the event Roy gets violent. ("Boys and Girls")
- Darryl teaches Michael fake slang, and Creed returns money that Michael "gave" him. ("Casino Night")
- Jim mutters "sex, Steve Martin ("Health Care") and ("Valentine's day"), Terri Hatcher ("Michael's Birthday")
- Michael employs win-win-win negotiation skills. ("Conflict Resolution")
- Roy calls Pam "Pammy". ("Cocktails")
- Michael references the Wikipedia article Negotiation (process), when dealing with Darryl, although he makes up the numbering. He refers to Wikipedia as "the best thing ever," and proceeds to cite the ability of anyone to edit its articles -- ironically, a point often used to fault Wikipedia's accuracy. Earlier, Jim relied on Wikipedia to confirm that Michael had incorrectly used the term prima nocte. ("Ben Franklin")
- Ryan's middle name is revealed to be "Bailey".
