[edit] Synopsis

The novel by V.S. Naipaul is a cross between a farce and acerbic social commentary about Trinidad, his home country. The novel is about a frustrated middle rung poor writer of Indian descent in Trinidad with 'an exaggerated awe of books' (Roger Ebert) who magically rises to become a successful politician on the back of his dubious talent as a 'mystic' masseur - a masseur who can cure illnesses.
