Inuyasha, Kagome, and Shippo are travelling by boat when they see a girl fall from a cliff. Inuyasha rescues her before she falls into the water, but instead of being grateful, she is disgusted by Inuyasha because she openly despises all demons. The girl, Nazuna, takes them to the temple where she lives. Her master, the monk in charge of the temple, asks that they forgive her behavoir because Nazuna's entire village decimated by demons known as Spider Heads. Since that incident, Nazuna has hated all demons.

Kagome is delighted to have a roof over their head for the night, but notices that InuYasha is unusually anxious. When she tries to ask him what is wrong, he brushes her off in his usual manner. That night, Kagome is attacked by a Spider Head seeking to steal her jewel shards. Nazuna tries to fight back while Kagome and Shippo try to get Inuyasha to help. The leader of the Spider Heads is revealed to be the true form of Nazuna's master and the one responsible for her village's destruction. Despite his oddly weak efforts, he ends up poisoned and Nazuna is hurt. The group manage to barricade themselves in a room.

In the room, Kagome is shocked to discover Inuyasha's hair has turned black. Myoga the flea, who has been hiding up until now, reveals that all half-demons have a period of time where they lose their demonic powers and become complete humans. For Inuyasha, this period of time is the night of the new moon. Kagome begins to see a gentler side to Inuyasha, who in his feverish state, remarks that she smells nice. This causes Kagome to blush and her heart to race. While she is unsure what this means, it is quite obvious that she has fallen in love with Inuyasha.

The group decide to wait until sunrise before escaping their sanctuary, but leader of the Spider Heads manages to break in and devour Kagome's jewel shards. Nazuna tries to fight back wielding Inuyasha's Tessaiga, but once again fails to do any damage. Kagome is left to defend Inuyasha and fight against the Spider Head, but with little success. Inuyasha recovers from his fever and takes his sword to fight against the Spider Head. Because he is still human, the Tessaiga will not transform and does little to hurt the Spider Head.

Just as Inuyasha is to be defeated, the sun rises and he turns back into his normal half-demon self and saves the day. As they leave, Nazuna reluctantly admits to Inuyasha that he is not a bad demon and she will try not to prejudge all demons from now on.
