[edit] History

The school was founded on 23rd April 1956 by Shri Surendra Nath Jauhar "Faquir", with the blessings of The Mother, Mirra Alfassa, a very close disciple of Sri Aurobindo. She was a renowned spiritualist.

The school's motto "More True, Forever More True" was given by the Mother herself and the school's emblem portrays a bird in flight rising towards heaven. When asked about the date of the school's opening, the Mother replied "23456". And as the only possible date was 23rd April 1956, it was this day indeed that the school first opened. Every year, the students of the school celebrate their unique Talent Fiesta on this date.

The school had a humble beginning but over the years has developed to establish itself as one of the foremost leaders of integrated education. In the beginning, a whole batch would have not more than 15 children, but today, a batch has 180 students, divided into 5 sections of 35-36 students each. The school has two wings, the Primary Wing, and the Senior Wing.

[edit] Aims

The school strives to create an awakening of cultural and spiritual values in accordance with the teachings of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. It has its own distinctive ethos. It aims at building an integrated personality by attempting to harmonize the different elements that constitute the individual - body, thoughts, feelings, instinct and impulses, aspiration and seeking. The very environment of the school is such that the student will automatically become an all rounder.

[edit] Environment

The school has a strength of about 2500 pupils with an average class size of 35 students. Each standard has five classes. The school provides ample scope for the all-round personality development of students. It has well-equipped laboratories in its different departments where stress is laid on understanding and appreciation of the subject rather than memorising for an exam-based system alone. It has a vast library where students can find books relating to various topics.

The school has its own stadium sized (400 metres) running track with appropriate training facilities for Athletics, Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton, Table Tennis, Sepak Takraw among others. These activities help in developing the child's personality.

The institution benefits from the serene Ashram ambiance and mutual interaction with the other institutions on the same campus, which include the alternative education school Mirambika, the pre-school Mira Nursery, and the Matri Karuna Vidyalaya. The campus also hosts a bakery, iron-work unit, wood-work unit, candle-making and handmade paper unit, vocational training centre, book store, and an organic vegetable farm.

[edit] Subjects, Activities and Achievements

The school teaches four languages: English, Hindi, Sanskrit and French. It also teaches Mathematics, Science and Social Studies till Class 10. There are three main streams for study beyond Class 10: Science, Commerce and Humanities.

The school also places emphasis on co-curricular activities such as art, craft, dance, sports, vocal and instrumental music.

Culturally, the school is a hub of activities. Being a member of SPIC MACAY, the School has active Drama, Quizzing, Yoga, Taekwondo, Gymnastics, Music (instrumental as well as vocal) and Art Groups apart from others. The school is continually a host to various inter-school as well as intra-school competitions.

The school has had a great record in the past years, with achievements ranging from academics to sports and co-curricular activities. It is one of the foremost in education in Delhi and has featured thrice in the Outlook Best School Survey as the best school in Delhi and one of the best in India.

A major plus point of the school is the small student to teacher ratio (1 teacher for every 36 students). Thus each child gets a lot of individual attention and is more involved in school activities. Each year, inter-house competitions are held in the school, like the Bag Drama, Oral Interpretation, Poem Festivals etc. The children also get to showcase their talents on the Talent Fiesta, held yearly on the 23rd of April.

The school has regularly produced geniuses, going on to study in India's most prestigious institutes, like the IITs, AIIMS, NLS etc. The healthy competition these students encounter at the school level ensures that there is no problem in adapting to the competitive conditions in such institutes.

Besides a brilliant record in academics, the school's students have done exceedingly well in extra curricular activities. The school quiz team is one the most formidable ones in the country. It has won many accolades for the school. Past laurels of the team include the Columban Open Quiz, the Bournvita Quiz, the HT Pace Quiz, the Japan Quiz etc. The school has also been winning the zonal sports competitions in Delhi. The teams of Basketball, Football, Table Tennis, Badminton, Sepak Takraw etc have been winning for a very long time. The school's computer club, MINET ( MIS Information NETwork) maintains a full fledged school website, www.themisonlin.org. These students also regularly win prizes at computer and IT festivals held all over Delhi. The computers department has produced many brilliant minds, winning awards at the national and even international level in competitions like the National Science Exhibition and International Olympiad in Informatics.

The school also hosts a prestigious football tournament every year, better known as the 'Surendra Nath Jauhar Tournament', in which many of Delhi's finest schools compete. The tournament, being a knockout competition, lasts for about almost a week, and the team winning the finals is proclaimed the winner, and is awarded the trophy.
