As Peligrina, Abeline's grandmother, tells a story (that displeased Edward) she remarks, "You disappoint me," As Abeline and Edward go with her parents to a ship to England, two boys throw Edward in the ocean. He waits for forty days and forty nights till a fisherman pulls him to his boat. He takes Edward to his wife, Nellie. She takes care of him with love naming him Susanne. Her daughter, Lottie is displeased with Edward and throws Edward into the dump. As months pass, a hobo named Bull and his dog Lucy find Edward and take care of him calling him Malone. As Bull and Edward get onto a train, the train conducter throws Edward off. Bull is not seen again. A woman finds him in the road and takes him to her farm and uses him as a scarcecrow. A bot worker, Bryce finds Edward and takes him to his sick sister, Sarahruth. The father doesn't take care of her as she dies. Bryce runs away with Edward calling him Jangles. He tries to make Edward dance and starts to eat all he can at a cafe. He does not have enough money and the owner throws Edward and he cracks. Bryce takes Edward to Lucius McGuire where he fixes Edward, but Bryce can never see him again. Edward now sat on a shelf with dolls who had been "alive" for a century. She gives him hope, but is soon bought. Years pass. A small girl visits the store with her mother. The girl picks out Edward and wants to buy him.
