[edit] History
Forming in 2001, they began by playing punk house parties and low profile shows before being discovered by acclaimed New Zealand independent record label Flying Nun Records. Described by the NME as 'the only band in the southern hemisphere', they have released two EPs and two albums under the Flying Nun Records banner: Octagon, Octagon Octagon (2003)(EP), Anti-Tiger (2004)(EP), Fuck The Golden Youth (2005)(LP) and Crazy? Yes! Dumb? No! (2006)(LP). All were produced and recorded by the band's core members Ruban and Kody Nielson, with the exception of 'Crazy? Yes! Dumb? No!' which was produced by the Nielson brothers and their father Chris Nielson. All four band members attended Orewa College in Orewa, New Zealand, although they now all live in Auckland City. Ruban began his music career in a band called 'Trendy Serpent' playing lead guitar with school friends: Chandler (guitars) & Ost (drums/vocals) The band was formed in 1997, & broke up in 1999, releasing no albums. (Ost going on to form the band 'The Poorly Rounded' While Chandler, began & still fronts the band 'Shoddy Workmanship') Kody also started a band while at school by the name of 'The Phat Controllers' which did well in the New Zealand Rock Quest, as well as impressing all who heard them, but like Trendy Serpent, broke up without releasing any albums. After a few initial lineup changes, (Josh Smith - Guitar, & Michael Robinson - Vocals) in 2001, Kody, Ruban, Paul, & Michael, (the current members) began playing pubs, bars, & halls as 'The Mint Chicks'.
