The Milwaukee Show

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Milwaukee Show is a reference to a show played by the group Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks wherein the group played almost nothing but songs by the band leader's former group, Pavement. The show was on May 24, 2003 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at the Todd Wehr Theater.

For the first several years of The Jicks' existence, no Pavement songs were ever played live. Then on May 24, 2003, spontaneously and without notice, the band opened the evening's show in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with "Summer Babe" from Pavement's Slanted and Enchanted album. What followed was a complete set of Pavement tracks in the chronological order that the band originally released them, playing roughly two to five songs from each album. Only during the show's encore did the band play Jicks songs (which also were in chronological order). Although the band was not thoroughly rehearsed, (Malkmus could be heard shouting chord changes and such) it is still an interesting and entertaining document. A subpar recording of the show exists.

A reporter from Tiny Mix Tapes briefly interviewed Stephen Malkmus directly after the concert: "I introduced myself and asked him, "So, why Milwaukee?" He replied, "Well, this is our second to last show and we wanted to switch things up a bit." Few Pavement songs have been performed by Malkmus' new band since, although he sometimes performs them at solo shows, such as one in Buenos Aires, Argentina on 10/23/04 and in New York City on 1/10/06.
