The Merlin Conspiracy is a novel by Diana Wynne Jones, published in 2003. The main characters, Arianrhod Hyde (called Roddy) and Nichothodes Euthandor Timosus Benigedy Koryfoides (a.k.a. Nick Mallory) come from alternate worlds (The World of Blest and Earth respectively) and the book is written from their point of view (each one writing alternate chapters). The Merlin Conspiracy is set in the same universe as Jones' Deep Secret, although the only character in common with that book is Nick.
Roddy has been with the Court, travelling with the King's Progress in the Blest, and she uncovers a sinister plot involving the Merlin, the governer of the Islands of Blest, to take over the throne. So Roddy and her friend, Grundo, try and warn other people about the conspiracy, whilst Nick finds himself accidentally wandering into different worlds. Both story-paths come together when Nick finds Maxwell Hyde, Roddy's grandfather, who is a Magid, a sort of magical policeman who travels between worlds that helps people. Nick and Roddy join forces, and they attempt to stop the Merlin. Roddy decides to raise the land, which means to let loose the magic in the world, while Nick calls upon the White Dragon to stop the Merlin. The Dragon lifts the Merlin high into the air, and drops the Merlin fall to his death.
