The Merger is the twenty-first episode of the Dilbert animated series, the seventh of the second season. It originally aired on January 25, 2000. The episode introduced the concept of cobuyitaphobia, or the fear of synergy.
Dilbert's company has made a profit for once: (a net worth of $20,000,000,000). However, raises are drawn out (the Pointy-Haired Boss states that if the good employees got raises, worthless employees like Wally would want raises too), and the company decides to merge. Following Dogbert's advice, they plan to merge with "Brainsuck Industries", which is actually a group of aliens who devour brains. In the end, the CEO of that company dies when it eats a few brains from the Marketing Department (which starve them to death), primarily thanks to Dilbert's plan to save his company, including Wally, who got stuck to "Door Watching Troll" for Catbert to escape the synergy.
[edit] Quotes
In the meeting room:
- Asok: Why don't we merge with a company that is less dysfunctional than we are? They could spend the money for us.
- PHB: A merger? Hmm. That might get us some synergy!
- <Alice gets up, screams, and runs out the room>
- Asok: I didn't realize Alice suffers from cobuyitaphobia.
- Loud Howard: I KNOW WHAT THAT IS. <looks around> NO, I DON'T!
- Asok: It is the fear of synergy.
In the boss' office:
- The Boss: WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO TO HIM?!? We'll never merge with this company if you kill the CEO!
- Dilbert: I didn't do it. He just went up to some marketing people, and started sucking out their brains.
- The Boss: Well, get him out of here! We don't want him dying here and ruining our safety record.
- <Camera pans to sign saying "2 days with no accidents>
