The Melbourne Times

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Melbourne Times is an Australian newspaper. It was established in the 1970s by Ann Polis, Tony Knox and John Jacobsen. It grew out of an earlier publication called the Carlton News. It was established to service to serve the inner Melbourne suburbs of Fitzroy, Collingwood and the City of Melbourne.

Its early editions featured campaigns against urban development. The current editor Glen Rohan joined the paper originally to sell advertising space.

It later expanded to include editions for the cities of Northcote, Richmond and Brunswick. Its sister newspaper, the Emerald Hill, Sandridge and St Kilda Times (later to become the Emerald Hill Times) was the local paper for the cities of South Melbourne, St Kilda and Port Melbourne, later merged to become the City of Port Phillip.

The newspaper changed hands several times in the late 1990s/early 2000s but is still edited by Glen Rohan. It is a free newspaper funded by advertising.

In mid 2004, it was purchased by Fairfax Community Network
