The Matthew Shepard Story is a 2002 television movie about the trial of the killers of Matthew Shepard. It starred Stockard Channing as Judy Shepard and Sam Waterston as Dennis Shepard, the parents, and Shane Meier as Matthew Shepard.
It seeks to illuminate the decisions Judy and Dennis Shepard had to make deciding with regard to whether the death penalty should be sought for their son's killer. Throughout the movie there are several flashbacks of Matthew's life. It also shows all the bad things that Matthew have been through his life during the junior high years and college life, which include his firts kiss, his first oyfriend and a very well played rape escene. The film's cast also included Kristen Thomson, Joseph Ziegler, Makyla Smith, Damien Atkins and Wendy Crewson.
