The company was founded by Jack Little (President & CEO), Cleve Moler (Chief Scientist), and Steve Bangert (now inactive) on December 7th 1984. The headquarters is in Natick, Massachusetts and currently employs nearly 1,500 people world-wide (over 66% of which work at the company headquarters).

It is a regular sponsor of Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and National Public Radio (NPR). It also sponsors the SDR Forum's Smart Radio Challenge (where student teams build and demonstrate a software defined radio) and the US Department of Energy's Challenge X (a student contest to 're-engineer a crossover sport utility vehicle to minimize energy consumption, emissions, and greenhouse gases while maintaining or exceeding the vehicle's utility and performance').
