[edit] Plot

The story takes place between wars in the year 1935, and focuses on the Topalović family, whose members include five generations of men who constantly bicker. Most of the family's arguments arise from the youngest son, Mirko (Bogdan Diklić), not wanting to join the family business (coffin-making). He believes there must be a better job for him, and his girlfriend Kristina (Jelisaveta Seka Sablić) and best friend support his determination. The Kristina's father constantly quarrels with the Topalović family, with whom he has business. However, Kristina cheats on Mirko with his best friend, so he kills her. He returns to his family who now praise him and accept him as their leader.

[edit] Awards

The Marathon Family won two awards in 1982, including the Jury Prize at the Montréal World Film Festival and the "Best Actress" award at the Pula Film Festival, which went to Jelisaveta Seka Sablić for her portrayal of Kristina.
