The Man from Space is the 14th episode of the TV series The Honeymooners. Ralph uses junk around the apartment to build a 'Man From Space' costume.
[edit] Plot
Ralph wants to borrow $10 so he can buy a costume for the upcoming Raccoon Lodge ball and win the $50 prize for most original costume. However, Norton wants to use the money to buy his own costume - that of "Pierre Francois de la Briosche," who designed and built the sewers in Paris. Naturally, Ralph takes it hard and declares war on Norton and says he wants nothing to do with him from now on. "If you see me coming down the street," Ralph threatens, "get on the other side." Norton replies, "When you come down the street, there AIN'T no other side!"
Ralph is doubly disappointed when Alice will have nothing to do with giving her husband the $10. Undaunted, Ralph decides to build his own costume out of pieces he gets from around the apartment, intending to show Norton up. Ralph uses knobs, pots and other small pieces around the apartment to make a "Man From Space" outfit for the ball (at one point, one of the knobs from his chest falls off. Ralph quickly picks it up, and without missing a beat, says, "Give me that - that's my de-naturizer."). Just before they're going to go to the ball, Norton shows up crestfallen (and saying that Ralph's costume resembles not a man from space but a Sherman tank) - it turns out that his 'hero' didn't invent the modern sewer - he condemned them. Norton decides to go out to an emergency call rather than show up at the ball without a costume.
At the ball, Ralph (with a little nudging to the judge) looks like he's about to be declared the winner for his costume of a 'pinball machine', when Norton bursts in still wearing his sewer outfit. The judge immediately declares Norton to be the winner, with his wonderful "Man from Space" costume. Ralph looks angrily at Norton, but then Alice starts dancing with Ralph, and Ralph lets a grin show that he holds no hard feelings and decides to let bygones be bygones.
[edit] Trivia
- This episode was featured (and referenced) in the 1985 film Back to the Future. Interestingly enough, a scene featuring it takes place on November 5, 1955, nearly two months before the episode actually first aired.
