[edit] Plot Synopsis

A flock of bats lead Yin and Bennett to Wayne Industries, where Bruce has a scientist named Dr. Langstrom working on a project related to bats. In truth, Langstrom actually develops a serum that can turn him into the "Man-Bat", so people will fear him. Man-Bat goes out of control and flies out into the city, feeding on animal blood.

[edit] Plot Summary

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Still on the hunt for the Batman, Detective Yin and Detective Bennett follow a swarm of bats as they fly over Gotham, in hopes that they belong to, and therefore lead to, the Batman. The swarm ends up flying into one of the top floors of Wayne Industries. The two detectives investigate and meet up with Bruce, who introduces them to an employee of his, Dr. Kirk Langstrom. Langstrom is an albino scientist who is researching bats. Bruce is about to cut the funding for Langstrom’s research after finding the swarm of bats, but the researcher tells Wayne that he is trying to find a cure for deafness, after stating that his niece Carlie is in fact deaf.

Bruce decides to pay a visit to Carlie with a gift, but is baffled when she can hear him perfectly. Bruce realizes that Langstrom was lying to him, and returns in time to find Langstrom, obsessing over articles of the Batman. Before Bruce can stop him, Langstrom drinks a mysterious serum, mutating himself into a giant albino bat. He thrashes Bruce before taking to the skies.

After changing into his costume, Batman follows after this new “Man-Bat”, engaging in a battle in the sky. After being pulled through the air, Batman manages to take Man-Bat down into an alley, closely followed by Yin and Bennett, where the creature reverts back to his human form. Batman manages to destroy one of Langstrom’s vials of the Man-Bat serum, but Langstrom drinks the last vial, once again becoming the monstrous bat. This time, however, he takes off after snatching Bennett.

Batman follows Man-Bat into the sewers with his Bat-Glider, eventually coming across Bennett, who is now strung upside down with Man-Bat’s mucus. Batman catches Man-Bat’s attention, and speeds off down the underground tunnels. Man-Bat follows fiercely, using his sonar-radar as its only vision. Man-Bat is suddenly blinded when Batman activates a sonar shriek with his Batwave, and Man-Bat crashes into a wall at full speed. After a huge wall of water blasts through the tunnels, Batman manages to save Bennett, and the two of them soon find the unconscious Langstrom.

[edit] Quotes

  • Langstrom: (after getting out of the vault) Mr. Wayne?
Bruce: Quite a scrapbook for someone who is never paid much attention to the Batman.
Langstrom: But don't trouble yourself, Mr. Wayne. A pompus prettyboy like you could never understand my work.
    Bruce: Try me, doctor.
Langstrom: I want to be like the Batman.
Bruce: You want to be a crime fighter?
Langstrom: (sinisterly) No, Mr. Wayne, I want to be feared. You've forced me to accelerate my testing schedule, and pity that the Batman himself can't be here to witness. (drinks the serum) The birth of Man-Bat!
  • Langstrom: (last line) In time, in time, the night will belong to Man-Bat. (laughs maniacally)
  • Yin: (after capturing Langstrom) Ok, Batman, where did you ditch the muscle suit.
Langstrom: You're making a big mistake, detective.
  • Bruce: (to Langstrom) Langstrom, take it easy. Can you hear me? Langstrom!
  • Bennett: Bruce, we need to talk.
Bruce: Ethan, I hope it is a social visit.
Bennett: Drop the act, buddy. We know you're the Batman. (pause) Psyche! (laughs) "You're the Batman"...
  • Langstrom: (after transforming back; to Batman) I know you would come calling, Batman. So tell me, who's the better bat?
Batman: This has to end now before you start feeding on humans.
Langstrom: Oh, I'm so close to my goal. Two more doses of my formula and the Man-Bat will rule the night forever.
