The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove is the fifth novel by author Christopher Moore, published in 1999. It is set in the same fictional town of Pine Cove, California as his first novel, Practical Demonkeeping), and also brings back a few of the same characters.
Pine Cove suffers a major crisis when the town psychiatrist Val Riordan, who has been haphazardly issuing prescriptions instead of dealing with the real mental issues of her patients, suffers a sudden bout of guilt and substitutes all of her patients' anti-depressants with placebos. By coincidence a prehistoric sea-beast is stirred from its offshore keep by a reactor leak and comes ashore. In addition to its ability to change form, it exudes a pheremone that inspires uncontrollable lust among the residents of Pine Cove and also lures some of them as prey. After trying to mate with a fuel truck (making the truck explode) it hides in a trailer park attracting the curiosity of local crazy lady and ex B-movie star Molly Michon who builds a repoir with the injured beast. Meanwhile Theo Crowe, the town constable investigates a strange suicide, his corrupt bosses going ons, and his suddenly vanished marajuana habit. When the beast (named Steve) starts eating residents of Pine Cove and messing with Theo's Boss's meth business, Theo and Molly (who has become romanticly involved with the beast) band together to safely let the beast escape and take down the Boss at the same time.
