The Looming Fog is the 2006 debut novel by the Nigerian writer, Rosemary Esehagu. The story follows the life of a child born with mixed genitals (an intersexed) as the child struggles to live in a pre-colonial village in Nigeria that considers its existence an abomination.
Through this nameless protagonist and narrator, one becomes aware of other members of this small society, including the second main character, Kayinne, who is the only surviving child of an elderly couple and who must battle with her society concerning her unnatural desire (for a female) of becoming a healer--a traditional doctor. The connecting thread among all these characters is that society places a burden (with different levels of heaviness) on each of them, and each of them must figure out a way to survive and rise up over it or perish into nonexistence. Who succeeds and who fails? How do they succeed? And what happens to the village that seems to be causing all these problems? Does it, somehow, actually help the characters and the village? The end of the story ties it all together; the story (with its characters) is like an intricate maze, and it explores what it means to be a person and gives a look into the strength of the human soul in the face of numerous challenges.
