[edit] Synopsis
While Pacey and Joey agonize over telling Dawson about their relationship, the day’s events unfold from three different perspectives:
[edit] Pacey’s Perspective
The gang meets at the dock to help christen Pacey’s boat, True Love. Pacey needs Doug to watch Buzz while he goes to visit Dawson to tell him about him and Joey. He misses Dawson at his house and is unable to tell him the news. Joey makes her way to tell Dawson that evening, but is too scared to tell him. Dawson hears Pacey and Joey arguing in the front yard and Pacey says that he and Joey are an “us”.
[edit] Joey’s Persepective
Joey joins the friends at the dock. Jen takes her to the library to do research and on the way the girls discuss the blossoming relationship between Joey and Pacey. At the library, Andie tells Joey that she has the hots for Will, but that "he's not Pacey". After running in to Dawson, Joey leaves a message telling Pacey not to tell Dawson about them; she wants to tell him herself. She then goes to Dawson's house, realizes she can't tell him, then meets Pacey on the front lawn. Dawson hears Pacey and Joey arguing in the front yard and Pacey says that he and Joey are an “us”. Dawson surprises the two by saying that he already knows.
[edit] Dawson's Perspective
The friends meet at the dock, where Joey and Pacey are hiding in a boat house, kissing. At the library, Will asks Dawson for advice on his date with Andie and ends up borrowing his boat. Dawson then goes to Jen's house where she tries to console him assuming he already knows about Pacey and Joey, thus inadvertently spilling the beans. Joey visits Dawson's bedroom where she is unable to tell him about her and Pacey. Dawson confronts Joey and Pacey on the front lawn and incites an argument among all three.
[edit] Day's End
After spilling the beans to Dawson, an upset Jen pushes Henry away. Meanwhile, Andie and Will share a first-date boat ride along the creek. Upon returning the boat, they encounter Pacey, Joey and Dawson in Dawson’s front yard. Andie also gets upset after learning about Joey and Pacey. During a fight Dawson is unable to comprehend why Joey has feelings for Pacey and gives her an ultimatum. After a tumultuous day, Pacey and Joey conclude that their relationship is over.

[edit] Trivia
- The Longest Day is shown in the style of the movie Groundhog Day where the day’s events are replayed over and over.
- At the beginning of each perspective, Joey says in voiceover: “Ever have one of those day you wish you could do all over again?”
- In one scene Dawson is watching The Last Picture Show, a film with a plotline that mirrors the relationship triangle between Dawson, Joey and Pacey. Dawson and Joey also watched this movie on their first date.
- While at the library Joey is researching Richard Nixon and the Watergate scandal. At the time, Michelle Williams had recently completed filming Dick with Kirsten Dunst, a fictionalized account of two girls and their involvement in the Watergate scandal.
- In another reference to her appearance in Dick, Jen borrowed All The President's Men, a movie about the Watergate scandal, from Dawson. She says that it was an incredible movie, but that Henry thought "it didn't have enough cute teenage girls in it".
- Referring to the day’s events, Dawson says, in his last scene, he has “no desire to rewind and live it again”.
