[edit] Synopsis
T.J. and friends have an important project to work on for class, so Gretchen suggests that they go to look for books in the library. However, as they browse the shelves they become aware that they are not alone. As it turns out, there's a child in the library: a pale, quiet girl who seems surprised to be talked to.
The girl (immediately dubbed the Library Kid) tells her story. Apparently, she was a precocious child, with advanced reading skills, knowledge of Basque, as well as a polite social manner. On the first day of school, she showed up willing to learn and keen to begin her studies, only to find her classmates were typical young children: colourful, noisy, rowdy, and more fond of throwing paper aeroplanes and pulling each other's hair than working. Frightened, she ran away from the classroom and into the nearest safe haven: a whole room full of books, a place that seemed like heaven. Since then, she has remained there, quietly keeping up her studies away from the classroom and even achieving a higher level of knowledge than the other children in her year group.
T.J. cannot understand why the Library Kid likes her solitude so much, and tells her that her classmates are older and more sensible now. He is even more horrified to find out that she doesn't go outside for recess, and encourages her to come with them next time. However, he hasn't reckoned on the girl's excitable personality: the normal bustle and activity of a Third Street recess thrills and frightens her to such an extent that she goes completely berserk and ends up climbing the flagpole. T.J. and his friends have to accept that their way of spending recess is not for everyone.
