The album is named after Willis Chin, a good friend of the members of Switchfoot. The album jacket of The Legend of Chin is covered with pictures of Willis. Willis Chin can also be seen in Switchfoot's DVD Switchfootage, as well as a number of Switchfoot's music videos, like "New Way To Be Human".

- The song "Chem 6A" refers to an introductory Chemistry course at that Jon Foreman took at UC San Diego.
- The song "Chem 6A" was Switchfoot's first music video.
- The album got a positive review from Billboard which called it "An intriguing and surprisingly mature effort for a debut release."[1]
