The Learning Center Foundation

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Learning Center Foundation, a non-profit foundation dedicated to research and the diffusion of knowledge for assisting children with learning disabilities, especially dyslexia. The Learning Center was founded in 1967 by Dr. Gerald Deskin, renowned psychologist, and continues to run as non-profit foundation in Encino, California. In its nearly four decades of existence, The Learning Center has assisted many tens of thousands of children from the greater Los Angeles area and set the standard for quality instruction on a one-student-with-one-credentialed teacher basis. The Learning Center's formula for success is based on the premise that if a student works in a highly focused and personalized environment with his own credentialed teacher, that student will achieve the highest possible results.

[edit] History

The Learning Center Foundation's humble beginnings were in a couple of rooms of an office building in Encino. Very quickly it expanded to consume the entire office building. The model of one-on-one teaching became a model that other for-profit educational institutional learned from, including Kaplan, and Huntington Learning Center, to provide educational services to groups of students.

[edit] Basis in Psychology

Dr. Gerald Deskin used psychology and psychological-educational evaluations to determine the root cause of educational difficulties. Over time, parts of over 30 psychological and psychological-educational evaluations became standard in the evaluation of children to best assess the assistance they need, either strictly educational or both educational and therapeutic. The assessment is extremely thorough so that all facets of the student's educational, emotional and behavioral patterns would be understood.

[edit] Current

Within the last 5 years, The Learning Center has adapted to the new realities of corporate competition and has updated its model of educating children. The Learning Center is now an approved candidate for WASC Accreditation and a Non-Public Agency with the California Department of Education.
