[edit] Part 1
Phoebe and Joey are packing up Monica and Chandler's apartment when Phoebe realises that Ross doesn't know that Erica has gone into labor. Joey says this isn't the best time to tell him; Rachel is still over at his apartment yelling at him about why he didn't get a goodbye at Rachel's going-away party. What Joey doesn't know is that Rachel and Ross are actually making out that very moment.
Monica and Chandler find Erica at the hospital preparing to give birth to a three-week early baby. Monica goes to the bathroom for a second leaving Erica with an uncomfortable Chandler. When she returns, Erica starts to give birth to a baby boy (who is later named Jack, after Monica's father). Just as Erica is about to settle down, the doctor announces the next one will be along in a minute. Shocked, Monica and Chandler discover that Erica is giving birth to twins, when neither they nor Erica herself knew. Erica reveals during one of her check-ups the doctor told her there were two heartbeats, but she thought it was one of her baby's and the other was her own heart. Soon, Erica gives birth to a baby girl (who is named Erica, after Erica).
Phoebe finds Joey in his apartment with his housewarming present for Monica and Chandler: a baby chick and duck, just like the ones he and Chandler used to own. Ross arrives to talk to Rachel. After being told about Erica, he reveals he slept with Rachel. Joey asks if she's still going to Paris as a result. Ross admits he didn't think about it. Rachel emerges from her room and has a private talk with Ross. She blinks back a tear and says that sleeping together was the perfect way to say goodbye.
At Central Perk, Ross tells Phoebe and Joey about what Rachel said. Phoebe suggests that Ross tell Rachel how he feels, then she might not go. Ross agrees, but Gunther beats him to it by telling Rachel that he (Gunther) loves her. Rachel says she'll think of him in Paris and gives him a kiss on the cheek.
Back at Monica's apartment, Joey and Mike, Phoebe's husband, are preparing 'welcome home' signs for the baby when Ross enters and says he's not going to talk to Rachel because he'll just get shot down like Gunther. Rachel herself appears to find that Monica and Chandler haven't arrived back yet; she has a plane to catch and she wants to see the baby. As if on cue, Monica enters carrying a baby boy. Everyone crowds around congratulating her when Chandler arrives with a baby girl. After the expected confusion, Rachel announces she has to leave. She gives Ross one final goodbye and heads for the airport. Moments after she's gone, Ross suddenly has a change of heart and chases after her in Phoebe's cab with Phoebe at the wheel...
[edit] Part 2
As Phoebe and Ross race to the airport to talk to Rachel, Joey helps Monica and Chandler pack up the apartment. He suddenly remembers his housewarming gift for the couple and heads to his apartment to get it. When he gets there, however, he finds the box containing the chick and duck is empty and starts searching for them. Hearing his unsuccessful bird calls, Monica and Chandler enter to find out what's going on. Joey tells them the situation and Chandler stays behind to help find them, despite his misgivings about the idea of having two baby birds in a house with infants. As Monica leaves, she steps on something that makes a crunch. Luckily, it's just an egg roll, but Joey is still angry.
Suddenly, Joey hears a tweet. He discovers that the chick and duck are in his much loved foosball table. After he and Chandler find out they can't open it up, they conclude they're going to have to bust it open. Joey finds a hammer and crowbar, but says he needs to give the table a proper sendoff first.
Meanwhile, Rachel is queueing up at the flight gate to Paris when Ross and Phoebe finally reach the airport. Ross is delayed when he has to buy a ticket to get past security but eventually he reaches the flight information board. He can't find Rachel's flight number so he calls Monica to double check. Monica says that the flight number is Flight 421 to Paris from Newark Airport. Ross realises why he can't find the flight number--Rachel's at Newark, he and Phoebe are at JFK; they're at the wrong airport.
Rachel boards the plane just as Phoebe and Ross set out for Newark, despite Ross' protests that they'll never make it in time. Back at Joey's apartment, Joey and Chandler still can't bring themselves to break open the table. Monica shows up, and she does it for Joey and Chandler.
Back on the road, Phoebe suggests that Ross talk to Rachel over the phone. Ross refuses despite Phoebe insisting that he has no choice. Phoebe calls Rachel anyway and makes up a story that something is wrong with the plane's left Phalange (which marks the last time the term was used). Rachel knows it's completely untrue, but the passenger sitting next to her overhears the conversation and thinks it's a major problem, so he encourages everyone to get off the plane. Rachel eventually gives in to mob mentality.
Monica, meanwhile, has successfully destroyed the table allowing Chandler and Joey to retrieve the chick and duck. Chandler asks if Joey's going to buy a new table but he replies that he's probably not going to use it much after Chandler leaves. Chandler says that maybe Joey should keep the chick and duck for company. Joey agrees, and the inseparable duo share a lame cool-guy handshake followed by a hug.
Phoebe and Ross reach Newark just as Rachel is about to board the plane again. Phoebe calls her just as she enters the gate causing her to come rushing back, surprised at Ross' arrival. Ross asks Rachel not to go because he's in love with her, and he knows she feels the same way about him. Nevertheless, Rachel boards the plane.
Phoebe returns to Monica and Chandler's apartment to announce the bad news. When she's asked where Ross is, she replies he went home; he didn't want to see anybody. Ross returns home to find a message from Rachel on his answering machine. Rachel admits her love for Ross and, realising she's doing the wrong thing, attempts to get off the plane. The message suddenly stops and Ross hits the machine saying "did she get off the plane...did she get off the plane?" Suddenly there is a voice behind him saying "I got off the plane" and he turns to see Rachel. They embrace and start kissing, telling each other that this is them now, they're done being stupid. Unless, Ross points out, they're on a break, this causes the passionate moment to be lost for a couple of seconds but they get back into their embrace and remain kissing.
The next day is Monica and Chandler's moving day. As all their furniture is moved out (after which, Joey muses: "Has this room always been purple?"), Monica remembers that they have to hand in their keys. It turns out that the couple aren't the only ones with keys to their apartment; everyone else in the gang has one as well. Rachel asks if Monica and Chandler have some time to get some coffee (to which Chandler asks "where?"), and they all go for one last drink at Central Perk.
[edit] Trivia
- The music playing as they leave is "Embryonic Journey" by Jefferson Airplane
- Joey took the chick and the duck off of Chandler and Monica's hands but in his spin-off series, "Joey", he did not have the chick nor the duck with him when he arrived in L.A.
- Some fans like to refer to this episode as "The One Where They Call It A Day" and "The One Where It All Ends" to keep it within the "TOW" Rule of the series.
