The Last Night of Ballyhoo

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Last Night of Ballyhoo is a two act play written by Alfred Uhry. The play takes place in December of 1939 in Atlanta, Georgia. Hitler is invading Poland, Gone with the Wind is making its debut and Adolph Freitag and his sister and nieces, a highly assimiliated Jewish family living in Atlanta, seem to be mainly concerned with Ballyhoo, a lavish ball sponsored by the local restrictive Jewish country club. When Adolph brings home Joe (his new, very eligible assistant whose ancestry hails from Eastern Europe and hence is restricted from the country club) home to dinner, Adolph's niece Sunny, a thoughtful young college student, is forced to examine her Jewish identity (or lack thereof) and the beliefs with which she's grown up.
