[edit] Plot summary

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

As the opening song of the film (Peaceful Valley) indicates, Littlefoot and company's arrival to the Great Valley is a relatively recent occurrence.

In search of more adventure, the kids decide to cross the tar pits to get to the Sheltering grass, to play Sharptooth attack. However, they fall in and have to be saved by their parents, who chastise them for disobeying the rule which stated that they weren't to cross the sheltering grass without their help. After Littlefoot talks to his grandparents, Cera comes in the night and takes him to a high stone tower. They decide to prove they aren't babies and run away. On their way, however, they see two Struthimimuses (Ozzy and Strut) stealing an egg from Ducky's nest, and decides to catch them. They follow them to a cave, where they meet Ozzy and Strut. Both sides panic, and accidentally kick off a landslide, the egg miracously landing safely in its nest without a scratch.

The kids find themselves in the "Mysterious Beyond" (the first time the word appears in the series). They can't find the egg, and assume it was smushed. This upsets ducky, until she finds an egg of the same coloring. They assume it was the stolen egg, despite the fact that it is several times larger than the real egg. Building a carrying nest, they pull the egg back to the Great Valley, to place it into the nest. To their surprise, they find the egg has returned. Now they know that the egg they have is not the same one as the original egg, and assume the "egg stealers" (Ozzy and Strut) had taken the egg. Littlefoot wants to tell the adults, but Cera bullies him to keep quiet. Littlefoot goes to his nest and sleep, only to be awoken several seconds later by his Grandmother.

Returning to the egg, the kids decide to hatch the egg, and speculate on the species and gender of the infant. not long afterward, the egg hatches, revealing a dark blue infant. They try to determine the infants species, when the infant opens its mouth- revealing very sharp teeth! The gang panics, and run screaming from the infant. Littlefoot runs as well, but a large vine throws him back to the infant. Panicking, he runs into some vines, leaving the infant sharptooth to sit sadly by himself. giving the infant sharptooth another look, Littlefoot realizes the young sharptooth is adorable, and decides that he wouldn't hurt him. This proves to be accurate, as the young sharptooth imprints on Littlefoot. Littlefoot explains that he isn't really his father, but decides to adopt him. He teaches the young Sharptooth to walk, and decides to name him. A large dragonfly fies over, and the sharptooth starts to attempt to bite it. He makes a "chomp" noise, so Littlefoot decides to name the sharptooth hatchling "Chomper." Chomper captures the dragonfly, and starts to eat it. This disturbs Littlefoot, as he does not know how to feed a sharptooth. He tries to get Chomper to eat plants, but Chomper finds the plants disgusting. Littlefoot goes off to ask his grandparents for advise (without telling them about Chomper). Meanwhile, hungry Chomper goes chasing after a Butterfly...

The gang work up the courage to go back to look for Littlefoot. They see the nest is empty; both Littlefoot and Chomper are gone. The gang decides that Chomper has eaten Littlefoot, and start to mourn. They are interrupted by Oxxy and Strut, who start to chase them for revenge because they ruined their supper. They are chased up to a cliff.

Meanwhile, Littlefoot finds Chomper on a rock on the tar pits, snapping at a butterfly. Littlefoot calls for Chomper, who grins and returns (He turns out to be much more nimble than everyone else). Littlefoot scolds Chomper, but then sees his friends on a high cliff. Telling Chomper to stay put, Littlefoot runs to help. He winds up getting trapped as well, and it seems like their end has arrived. Suddenly, the shadow of a sharptooth arrives, scaring the daylights out of Ozzy and Strut, who jump off the cliff. The gang shudders and huddles, and the sharptooth is revealed to just be Chomper (perhaps as a foreshadowing for Chomper's future). They are all introduced, and sing "We're a Family and You're one of us Now." Chomper's sharptooth instinct takes hold, and he bites Cera on her tail. He is scolded and made aware of his differences, and the gang realize they sound like their parents. Deciding he is too dangerous, Chomper runs away.

The gang follow him to a volcano (which happens to be silently erupting). Their yells foil another attempt by Ozzy and Strut (who survived their fall) to steal another egg. Furious, they plot to kill them. They follow the gang and again trap them. Their cries for help are heard by Chomper, who comes to help them. Before Chomper arrives, the Struthimimuses learn the "sharptooth" is just an infant. Strut is bitten by Chomper, and they all escape. They cross a tree bridge and they all escape. Oxxy and Strut fall off, and go down in abyss with the lava.

The gang then meet a pair of sharpteeth, who attack them and start hunting for food in the Great Valley. The kids realized they let the sharpteeth in by causing the landslide. They all try to fend off the Sharpteeth, and the adults eventually hold them off. Littlefoot and co. is tolded to stay put while the adults go to fix the wall to keep anymore sharpteeth from entering the valley. Littlefoot realizes that Chomper has vanished, and goes after him. He finds Chomper in the forest, but their reunion is interrupted by the sharpteeth. They trap Chomper, who then makes a hoarse growl. The sharpteeth realize that Chomper is their infant, and take him with them. Littlefoot realizes how they are related to Chomper, and thoughtfully walks off, only to meet Ozzy and Strut, who decide to throw him off the Great Wall. Chomper hears his cries, and walks off to investigate, followed by his protetive parents. Ozzy and Strut decide to get rid of him too, only to be twarted by Chompers parents, who chase them out of the Great Valley. There is no word on whether or not Chomper and his parents ate Ozzy and Strut in the Mysterious Beyond. Chomper returns to Littlefoot, who forces him out of the Valley as he is just a kid. They say good-bye, and Chomper leaves the Valley. The hole in the wall is filled up purposely with another landslide, activated by Grandpa and Littlefoot. Littlefoot and his friends go out and play in the Valley. In the end credits, the egg that had been stolen hatches, revealing a female swimmer to have been in the egg. Chomper is not seen until The Land Before Time V: The Mysterious Island.

Spoilers end here.

  • This was the film that introduced the musical element into the series and it has consistently remained ever since.
  • The opening song, Peaceful Valley, was one of the few songs not sung directly by Littlefoot and the others.
  • A verse from the opening song states "We finally found a peaceful valley and everyone's having a good time now!" This indicates that this film takes place only a short time after the first film. That may or may not indicate that the creeping Egg-stealer/Struthiomimus seen in the end credits of The Land Before Time is Ozzy.
  • This was the first time Spike "sings"; his lips can be seen moving during You're One of Us Now.
  • Another verse of Peaceful Valley, in the end/credits, has the word 'sun' in it, where in all other references to the sun the use the words 'Great Circle'.
  • The Internet Movie Database mistakes this film to be produced by Amblin Entertainment as well.
