[edit] Plot

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The Lake of Souls takes place straight after Killers of the Dawn, with Mr. Crepsley dead and Steve's revelation that he is the Lord of the Vampaneze. Darren is unable to cry but with the help of the bearded lady, Truska, he finally lets it all out. Mr. Tiny then appears and tells Harkat that if he wants his nightmares, which have returned, to stop then he should go through a portal that Mr. Tiny makes. Darren starts Debbie and Police Chief Alice, who want to start an army to combat the Vampets, on the journey to Vampire Mountain as he wishes to go with Harkat. Soon they are both thrown into a strange world with dragons, giant toads, a giant human-worm like-being hybrid and a cannibal.

It is finally revealed that Harkat is in fact the resurrected soul of Kurda Smahlt (Mr. Tiny took Kurda's soul from the future to the past). While trying to evade a dragon, Harkat pulls up his former identity. Later, Mr. Tiny comes and tells them since Kurda and Harkat are of the same soul, only one could survive. It is decided that Harkat will remain alive. Harkat Mulds is an anagram of Kurda Smahlt. It is also said at the very end, that the world that Harkat and Darren went into was most likely the future.

It is also told by Lady Evanna that no matter who wins the War of the Scars, either Darren or Steve would become the Lord of the Shadows - ruthless controller of the world that will destroy all humanity.
