Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Imrhien is now no longer deformed or mute. In fact, she is revealed at being very beautiful. Giving herself a new identity, Imrhien, now called Rohain, her voice returned and her face now a vision of loveliness manages for the first third of the book to make her way rapidly to the King's Court ranks at Caermelor, searching for the handsome Dainnan Thorn who captured her heart in the first book.

Rohain soon notices these nightmares of rats that keep on repeating and suspects that they might have been from her past as she frantically tries to remember her past while keeping up with Court intrigue and searching for Thorn.

Around the middle of the book, she finds Thorn at last, who is revealed as the King and they have a brief, albeit passionate affair before things turn upside-down once more. Fearing for her life, Thorn sends her to a secluded island to rest their in safety, but the mysterious person who is looking for her sends wights over to bring her to him.

Escaping narrowly with her life, she flees with Caidy (a girl) and Viviana (her maidservant) and finds her bracelet of old in the last chapter of the book. Hitting upon the only thing that would unlock her memory once and for all, the gates of her memory finally swing open to reveal her as Ashalind na Pendram, daughter of Leodrogan na Pendram, the Duke of the Talith race that mysteriously disappeared all those years ago.
