The King of Fighters 2002 is the ninth game in the King of Fighters series, and is the second and last King of Fighters game developed by Eolith. The game is a "dream match" game in the vein of The King of Fighters '98, and is not part of The King of Fighters series' storyline.
The game brings back the team play composed by three characters each that was a tradition in previous games. The game also several important changes in the gameplay, like the "Free Cancel System" or "Max Mode System", the "Quick Emergency Evasion" and "Quick MAX Mode Activation", aside from the countless changes in each character's special moves and their properties.

After beating the game, throughout the credits sequence there's a series of random character "outtakes" involving the KoF characters in out of character situations. Their appearances are completely random and hilarious at the same time. Some of these sequences include but are not limited to:
- Clark facing off against a woman (Mai, Yuri, Athena, Mary, Vanessa), scooping them off and running off with them, with their prospective love intersts quickly running after them. He also faces against K' and Vice, but he kidnaps K' and tackles Vice.
- Shermie striking her various poses, either to the delight of a large crowd of fighters or to a nervous Kensou.
- Fighters playing baseball with a 'ki' ball with Billy as the batter.
- Ramon going to extreme means to win Vanessa.
- Goro and little mini Goros in various situations.
