[edit] History of The Junk Journal
The Junk Journal was officially founded on February 23, 2003, by Jordan Mader. The first issues were distributed among a small amount of subscribers in the Darboy area. The first issues were four pages long and published weekly. By the end of the summer in 2003, The Post-Crescent had picked up on the story and decided to print an article on this small Darboy newspaper. Immediately, the subscription list skyrocketed to over 80 subscribers. Other articles on "TJJ" were published in The Compass[1] and The Times-Villager.
[edit] Changes in the Paper
After the first full year of publication, The Junk Journal's staff decided a weekly paper was too much of an undertaking. They decided to change the paper's format to every other week. The content stayed the same, more subscribers joined, and ten businesses placed advertisements in TJJ. After the third anniversary of TJJ in 2006, it was announced that The Junk Journal would become a monthly publication. It is now published every month and is six pages long.
[edit] Content in The Junk Journal
The Junk Journal focuses on the area known as Darboy, an unincorporated area located between Kaukauna, Appleton, and Kimberly in the Fox River Valley. The area is a fast-developing residential suburb with a growing commercial district. In monthly issues, the Junk Journal has seven main parts:
- The Main Article- an article focusing on an interesting person or event in Darboy
- The JM Column- an opinionated column, the subject changes every week
- Sarah's Profile- a staff writer profiles a subject for every issue
- Lucas's Corner- a full page section displaying a story, poem, picture, etc. (written by Lucas Mader)
- The Month in Sports- a in-depth look at sports in the Fox Valley and the USA
- Darboy and the Valley- a summary of news in Darboy/the Heart of the Valley in the past month
- The Back Page- trivia, fun, jokes, just asking feature, etc.
[edit] Special Publications
The Junk Journal has published a variety of books and features during the four years of its publication.

- Darboy's Past, Present, and Future- A comprehensive look at the community of Darboy.
[edit] Some Miscellaneous Junk Journal Quotes
TJJ has produced many memorable quotes throughout the years. Here are two examples of The JM Column, a monthly opinion column written by the editor.
[edit] Political Campaigns
"Something needs to be done. Cap campaign spending. or would it be even wiser to have a candidate who simply used his/her airtime to promote why we should vote for them and not the other guy? List your agenda. Tell us what you're going to do if you're elected. That's what we want to know. A candidate with this appraoach would probably win anyway, even if he was a turtle, because the public is sick of the ridiculous mudslinging on the dead-end campaign trail." -TJJ September 2006 Issue
[edit] Orthodontists and Dentists
On orthodontists and dentists: "Quoted by Ortho-guy (as he will be known throughout the column): 'That's never happened before'. Allow me to explain. He was referring, of course, to the epic battle waged between himself and a spring that is now wedged uncomfortably in my molars. Ortho-guy proceeded to shove the spring deep inside my mouth before lodging it firmly into position. Problem is, for three consecutive tries, he missed the place the spring connected to. This sent a metal object zinging out of my mouth and into the upper atmosphere at roughly Mach 1." -TJJ November 2006 Issue
[edit] The Future
The Junk Journal has big plans for the future, including a plan to launch a website in summer 2007. A variety of new publications are expected to come out, as well as the continuation of the monthly publication.
