The Island School is located on Cape Eleuthera, on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. Founded by Chris and Pam Maxey in 1998 the Island school is a semster study program described as a "mind, body and spirit experience that challenges students by immersing them in the ocean and introducing them to another culture"[2] The program is structured to present students with authentic challenges that help them grow intellectually, emotionally and physically. The first official semster of The Island School in 1998 consisted of 22 students and 6 faculty members, the majority of whom were from The Lawrenceville School in New Jersey. The campus is located on Cow Point, near the southern-most tip of Eleuthera. The small campus is powered by a series of sustainable systems that allow the school to reduce its ecological impact. The school generates the majority of their electricity with photovoltaic panels on almost all of the roofs, and a 100ft tall wind generator. A unique waste processesing system known as the "poo-poo garden" filters waste water so it can be safely released into the environment. Other systems include solar water heating and food production.

Each year students from their respective schools apply to spend a trimester at the Island School. Through a very selective process, they are chosen. During their tenure they experience a very hands-on way of learning and complete a half marathon run or a 4 mile swim.
