'The Inheritance' is an 8000 word short story by Robin Hobb published in the Voyager 5: Collector's Edition anthology. Set in The Realm of the Elderlings, it is written as a first-person narrative by the granddaughter of a former Bingtown Trader, as she discovers why her grandmother left Bingtown society - and the true nature of the legacy that she has inherited.

The story fills in more of the back-story for The Liveship Traders Trilogy, dealing primarily with the Bingtown Traders and their politics.

The anthology The Inheritance originally appeared in was a promotional paperback, never offered for sale by the publisher - as such the story was difficult to obtain. In August 2005, Robin Hobb announced that the story would be available as a downloadable e-book from Amazon Shorts
