[edit] Plot summary

This book continues from The Burning Bridge, where Will and Evanlyn are bound for Skandia, as captives of the Skandian Jarl, Erak. Halt has sworn to rescue Will but cannot get a release from Ranger Commandant Crowley. He defies his King and is banished. Because of his banishment, he is also expelled from the Ranger Corps. As he travels to Gallicia, he meets Horace who joins him. As Horace challenges, and defeats, the freelance knights who are also known as thieving thugs, his reputation grows. Soon, they attract the attention of freelance knights and war lords for miles around.

However as Horace and Halt work to reach Skandia and rescue their two friends, Will unknowingly succumbs to a warmweed drug addiction after being tricked into having some of the potent drug by two other slaves he had previously confronted. The addiction robs him of his mind and senses leaving him a dry shell of who he used to be. Will Halt and Horace get to him before the addiction grows too strong?
