The House of Dies Drear

The House of Dies Drear, by Virginia Hamilton, is a children's novel. It tells the story of 13-year-old Thomas, a modern boy who moves into a house that was once part of the Underground Railroad.

The story takes place during the 1960s where Thomas Small moves from his home with his grandmother to a house with many secrets.

It was an ALA Notable Children's Book and a Mystery Writers of America "Edgar" Award winner after its publication in 1968.


It was adapted for television's WonderWorks series by Children's Television Workshop.
