[edit] Making of the album
On his third album, the focus of Skinner's lyrics and storytelling has shifted away from descriptions of everyday circumstances and occurrences, and instead describes the changes that fame has granted (and sometimes imposed) on Skinner's life. The album, like his earlier material, was written and recorded by Skinner; it was recorded in the last months of 2005, partly in New York to "get away from his mates", according to NME. It is also the shortest album released so far, with a running time of just 37 minutes and 12 seconds. The Mitchell Brothers and Ted Mayhem, two of Skinner's proteges, make guest appearances on the album.
[edit] Critical response
Though The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living was generally well-received at the time of its release, it gathered mostly mixed reviews, with critics believing that Skinner's newfound obsessions with fame and the album's rushed production has affected his work greatly. This somewhat negative response proved to be a first for the Streets, as the last two albums were hardly given bad reviews. Despite that, many of the album's songs, especially "Never Went to Church" and "Prangin' Out", have quickly become live favourites.
[edit] Chart success
The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living debuting at #1 on the UK album chart sold around the 71,000 mark in its first week. Hitting the top spot, The Streets claimed their second chart topping album.
