In the film, Karen Davis (Gellar) travels to Tokyo, Japan with her boyfriend Doug (Jason Behr) as a foreign exchange student. With Matthew and Susan Williams finding their mother Emma Williams a home, Matthew and his wife Jennifer move in. Days later strange occurrences happen, One afternoon the family's housemaid Yoko mysteriously disappears in the house. Karen is sent to work at the house but is exposed to Kayako's curse. With Jennifer, Matthew, and Susan Williams also mysteriously disappearing, Karen investigates the occurrences that lead her to unveil the truth behind the house and of the Saeki Family massacre years earlier. With learning the revelation Karen informs the Authorites and prevents anyone from re-entering the house. As karen tried to stop her boyfriend Doug from entering the house, Karen encounters Kayako who reveals more background information leading into the massacre.

After Aubrey (Tamblyn) receives a phone call from her mother (Joanna Cassidy) regarding her sister Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) being involved in an accident in Tokyo, Japan, Aubrey leaves America and heads to Japan where she tends to uncover the origins and mystery behind the deadly supernatural force.

Karen Davis (portrayed by Sarah Michelle Gellar) is the main character in the The Grudge. Karen orignally travelled to Tokyo, Japan with her boy friend Doug (Jason Behr) as a foreign exchange student. During her studies in Tokyo, Karen decides to volunteer as a house maid for a social worker program.

Aubrey Davis (portrayed by Amber Tamblyn) is the main character in The Grudge 2 and is Karen's younger sister. After Aubrey receives a phone call from her mother (Joanna Cassidy) telling her of Karen's accident, Aubrey travels to Japan where she tends to uncover the origins of the curse.

Though critically panned, The Grudge was a box office success. The first film opened in North America on October 22, 2004. The film generated $39.1 million in ticket sales in its first weekend of release, and declined 43% in its second weekend with $21.8 million, becoming the first horror film to top the Halloween box office since House on Haunted Hill (1999). It made a total of US$110,359,362 in North America alone and $183,474,602 worldwide, far exceeding the expectations of box office analysts and Sony Pictures executives alike. The company stated that the film cost less than $10 million to produce, thereby making it one of the most profitable films of the year.

A sequel, The Grudge 2, was announced three days after the film opened [1]. The sequel stars Amber Tamblyn as Aubrey, who is Karen's little sister. She is sent to Japan by their mother to investigate the whereabouts of Karen, who has not been heard from. The film was released on Friday, October 13, 2006 in the U.S.

A sequel to The Grudge 2 was officially announced by Sony during Comic-Con 2006. Takashi Shimizu stated he is offered to direct the sequel but would rather prefer to produce the film instead [2].
