"The Gnome" is a song by then psychedelic music, later progressive rock band Pink Floyd. It was written by the band's first leader, Syd Barrett. After the first few seconds that fade out of Interstellar Overdrive, the song tells the tale of a gnome named Grimble Gromble. It appears on their debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn.
Shpongle's "A New Way to Say 'Hooray!'" (from Tales of the Inexpressible) contains a direct reference to "The Gnome" as a sound byte of Terrence McKenna claims "The Gnomes have found a new way to say 'hoooray!'" McKenna's voice is altered to match Barrett's elongation of the word "hooray."
The Chicago-based dream pop band Grimble Grumble takes its name from this song's main character.
The British actor Nigel Planer recorded this song under the name and pretext of Neil, his character in the UK sitcom The Young Ones in 1984. It appeared on his eponymous album.
