The Gift of a Cow (or in original Godaan (गोदान) is a Hindi novel by Munshi Premchand. A 1963 film by the same name was based on it.

Many readers consider Godaan (The Gift of a Cow), Premchand's last novel, as his best.[citation needed] The protagonist, Hori, a poor peasant, desperately longs for a cow, a symbol of wealth and prestige in rural India. Hori gets a cow but pays with his life for it. After his death, the village priests demand a cow from his widow to bring his soul to peace.

Also:

Godan also means donating a cow. It dissolves a persona sins and gets blessings from the coz which is a considered as the biggest symbol of MotherHood in India.
Donating a cow with a calf is the best thing to do as charity. Its good if its given or donated to a Brahmin.
