The Ghost of Cain is the third studio album of British rock band New Model Army. It was released in 1986 and was re-released in 2005 as a limited edition remastered 2-CD-set. It is the first of their studio albums to name its producer, namely Glyn Johns. It is also the first of their albums to include the lyrics on the sleeve.
The Ghost of Cain propelled the band forward to the forefront of the alternatives rock scene of the 1980's. Not least thanks to the widely acclaimed underground hit song, 51st State, which is the only song by the band to date to feature lyrics not written by the band themselves; the lyrics were written by Ashley Cartwright of The Shakes.
It is the first album to feature new bassist, Jason Harris. It also features Mark Feltham as a guest musician on harmonica on songs Poison Street and Ballad.
Brazilian Metal band Sepultura covered the song "The Hunt" on their 1993 album Chaos A.D. and UK folk metal band Skyclad covers the song "Master Race" on their Oui Avant-Garde a Chance album in 1996.
