The Funky Phantom was a Saturday morning cartoon, produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions in 1971 for ABC. Similar to Hanna-Barbera's successful Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, The Funky Phantom featured three teenagers — Skip, April, and Augie — and their dog Elmo. These four living beings solved spooky mysteries with the help of two ghostly companions, a Revolutionary War-era ghost named Jonathan Wellington "Mudsy" Muddlemore (with Daws Butler referencing his Snagglepuss voice for Mudsy) and his cat, Boo. The two of them allegedly hid from the British inside a longcase clock during the Revolutionary War, but then couldn't get out; their ghosts emerged from the clock almost two centuries later. The animation was produced for Hanna-Barbera by Australian studio Air Programs International.

Mudsy appeared in the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim program, Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, where the question "What makes the Funky Phantom so funky?" is finally asked and answered.
