The Freight and Salvage

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Freight and Salvage (known as "The Freight") is a nonprofit musical performance venue in Berkeley, California, that primarily hosts folk music and world music acts. It was founded in 1968 and derived its name from the used furniture store that previously occupied the same space on San Pablo Avenue. In 1983, it was formally incorporated as the Berkeley Society for the Preservation of Traditional Music. In 1988 the club moved into its current 238-seat space on Addison Street. Notable musicians who have performed at the Freight include Greg Brown, Dan Bern, David Bromberg, David Grisman, Tom Paxton, Ricky Skaggs, Cheryl Wheeler, Dar Williams, Cris Williamson and Odetta. The Freight is currently preparing to move to a 430-seat venue in Berkeley's Downtown Arts District in 2008.

Several artists have released live recordings of Freight performances, including John Wesley Harding, Suzy Thompson and the Berkeley-based band Rebecca Riots.
