[edit] Synopsis

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

While Crichton is taking flying lessons from Aeryn in one of Moya's transport shuttles, the shuttle become stuck to an unseen barrier in space that they can't navigate away from, damaging the shuttle.

As they try to solve this problem, a scavenger named Staanz boards and warns Moya's crew of "The Flax", an invisible energy drift net controlled and used by his former colleagues—Zenetian pirates—to capture ships and strip them of anything valuable. Staanz offers, for a small fee, not only to steer Moya around it but to also help D'Argo recover maps off a trapped Luxan ship.

However, not long after D'Argo and Staanz depart, Moya is boarded by the same Zenetian pirates Staanz warned them about. Rygel engages the Zenetian Pirate leader Krackic to a game of Tadek, in which they wager various things. Zhaan thinks he's being greedy and frivolous, but it turns out it was all a (successful) plan on his part to get rid of the pirates.

Meanwhile, the situation on Moya's transport pod has degenerated, as they are losing oxygen quickly. Aeryn suggests they vent the shuttle and repair it while wearing space suits. An excellent plan that is foiled when they discover that John's helmet is broken. Aeryn injects John with a shot that stops his heart while she effects the repairs. She revives him after the four minutes he specified as being the limit for humans before brain damage begins, but unfortunately she did not finish the repairs, meaning she has doomed herself--if she had let John die, she could at least have finished the repairs and saved herself. It is a big moment for Aeryn, as she ignores her PK training in favor of other feelings. Realizing they only have about a half hour of air left, Aeryn and John fall into a passionate embrace.

D'Argo gets to the Luxan ship, but then becomes worried about Aeryn and John's fate, as he knows they must have been trapped by the flax. He must choose between the Luxan maps and his friends, since the Luxan ship is about to be destroyed. He chooses Aeryn and John, and interrupts them, somewhat to their momentary regret. They abandon the shuttle and travel back to Moya with Staanz, who confesses love for D'Argo. It turns out that, five o'clock shadow notwithstanding, Staanz is the female of her species, and she is in love with D'Argo, to his dismay.

Safely back on Moya and away from the flax, Aeryn and John agree that they acted in "the heat of the moment," and it will never happen again. But John seeks confirmation that Aeryn is the female of her species, nonetheless.
