The Fire This Time is an audiodocumentary about the 1990-91 Gulf War on Iraq and its aftermath.
In April 1999 Grant Wakefield and Miriam Ryle travelled to Iraq to update Ryle's 1994 documentary 'Voices From Iraq'. Amongst the footage they shot was an interview with the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator for Iraq, Hans von Sponeck. Von Sponeck went on record for the first time to condemn the United Nations sanctions against Iraq, as his predecessor Dennis Halliday had done and to accuse the United States and the United Kingdom of playing games with the sanctions, to the detriment of the Iraqi people. On their return to the UK, Wakefield offered this unedited interview to the BBC and to Channel 4. When it was refused, he decided to use this and other material he had collected to make an audio CD. The CD documentary charts the story of Iraq and its role in the geopolitics of the West, from the beginning of the 20th century to the murderous UN sanctions at the end of the nineties. The documentary consists of three parts: part one 'Plans'; part two 'The Fire Comes'; and part three 'One Nation Under A Siege'.
There are two CDs. The first CD is the audiodocumentary, using a mix of narration, interview and sound samples from news archive mixed to operatic effect with commissioned music. The second CD is the instrumental version of the songs used for the first disc. Almost all songs are previously unreleased (the exceptions are listed below).
