The Fenway
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Fenway refers to either a thoroughfare or an area within Boston, Massachusetts. "Fenway" (without "the") can apply to either but may also refer to Fenway Park. Like many terms germain to a particular urban area, "The Fenway" and "Fenway" are usually understood precisely in context by locals but may seem ambiguous to those less familiar with the area.
The region of Boston known as the Fenway is discussed in the Fenway-Kenmore article.
[edit] The Parkway
The thoroughfare known as "The Fenway" is a one-way, two-lane parkway that runs North along the Western edge of the Back Bay Fens. It begins at Ruggles Street two blocks South of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, passes behind the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and finally merges into Boylston Street where the Fens come to an end.
The Fenway and the adjacent Fens were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted to serve as links in the Emerald Necklace park system. In addition to larger parks, the Emerald Necklace includes these other parkways:
It may be noted that unlike the other parkways in this system, the Fenway wasn't needed to connect two other links since the Fens meet the Riverway at one end and Commonwealth Ave at the other.
