The Dive is a James Cameron film project, next in line after Avatar. It's based on the true story of Francisco "Pipin" Ferreras and the late Audrey Mestre, world-champion competitors in the deadly and controversial sport of freediving, in which athletes dive to unthinkable depths on a single breath of air.
[edit] Synopsis
Audrey Mestre was a beautiful French marine biology student researching the physiology of freediving. When she decided to base her studies on the legendary Pipin, a passionate romance was born. Pipin and Audrey soon married and moved to Miami, where she took up the sport herself and proceeded to break the female world record (115 metres). They became freediving's power couple, constantly training together and encouraging one another. But on October 17, 2002, Audrey pushed her body too far and died off the coast of the Dominican Republic while attempting to break the world record -- which was currently held by her husband.
[edit] Pre-Production
In 2004, screenwriter Dana Stevens, writer of Life or Something Like It, was hired to write the script for the film, with Cameron producing alongside his partners Jon Landau and Rae Sanchini. According to The Hollywood Reporter, James Cameron purchased the rights to Francisco Ferreras' life story as well as a story from Sports Illustrated on Ferreras. In Februrary 2006, Laeta Kalogridis, who is co-writing Battle Angel with Cameron, was announced she was writing the script for The Dive, to be filmed after Cameron's mysterious 'Project 880', later revealed to be Avatar.
