"The Diary of Jane" is the first single from the Breaking Benjamin album Phobia.
The single moved rapidly up the charts in its first week of official release. It was the #1 most-added track at three formats: Modern Rock, Active Rock and Rock. "The Diary of Jane", as of June 2006, can be heard on over 100 radio stations nationwide. The song was streamed from the band's MySpace over 160,000 times in two weeks of its release to the Internet. "The Diary of Jane" was the fastest added single in Hollywood Records history, topping such mega-stars as Queen. The success of the song led it to be featured in the video game NASCAR 07.

[edit] Original Versions
The song has three different versions, two of which are found on Phobia. The original was released with the single and was the track used on the video. This is the version which is played on the radio. This song is nearly exactly the same as the album version, except the ending fadeout ends on a lower note.
The second version is track number 2, with the usual Breaking Benjamin sound of heavy drums, guitars, and the powering vocals of Benjamin Burnley, as well as his trademark deep-screaming of certain key lines. It is a re-recording of the single/video version.
The third version is found as a bonus track on the first pressing of the album Phobia. This version is an acoustic version, with softer vocals by Benjamin and harmonized softly by Aaron Fink and Mark Klepaski, as well as a shift of instruments: from drums, bass and guitar to piano, orchestral strings such as the violin and the cello. The song also has a more minor feel, although it is written in the same key.

The video for "The Diary of Jane", directed by Ryan Smith, made its world premiere on Yahoo! Music on June 21, 2006, after originally being scheduled for release on June 16. The video features a woman named Jane. Jane wakes up suddenly in a bathtub, getting out and getting dressed. However, her vanity's mirror is gone, and only the frame remains. Jane runs around her house, with similar results wherever there should be a mirror. She eventually stumbles across a room where all the mirrors are, and she cannot see her reflection in any of them.
Jane is played by Sarah Mather from Season 4 of American Idol. The video ends with Ben closing a diary on Jane's tombstone. The last name was obscured, but in the second episode of the band's podcast, the name can be clearly seen as Bryan during a shot of the tombstone.
Jane Bryan was a female filmstar in the 1930s and 1940s. She was in many films, including one titled We Are Not Alone, which also happens to be the name of Breaking Benjamin's second album. Her filmography and biography are here. However, whether or not the band meant for her name to be of significance is unknown, and unconfirmed.
